Kelebek Pension has a wonderful location, right in the heart of Goreme's historic old village, with spectacular views looking out towards Uchisar and Cavusin. Until 1993 Kelebek was my family home, and like most homes in Goreme, it was made of a mixture of cave rooms and stone-arched rooms which had been added later. But the history of the site stretches right back to prehistory, to the days when the eruption of Mt Erciyes and then the effects of wind and rain on the tuff created our two fairy chimneys.
In medieval times the rooms in the top of these two chimneys served as simple chapels for local hermits; one of them even has a frescoed cross on the ceiling. Later my family used them to raise pigeons, store grapes, even to house a small library.
Today the ‘Butterfly' pension has 16 rooms, some of them in the fairy chimneys, some in caves and some of them in the traditional arched rooms where my family used to live. The rooms are divided into three categories: Regular Rooms, Deluxe Rooms and a Honeymoon Suite complete with Jacuzzi in what was once a storeroom-cum-cooking area.

Of course Kelebek has been modernised, with central heating to ward off the winter chill and hot showers in the rooms. Upstairs in our sitting room, with its traditional-style open fireplace, you can watch satellite TV news channels in English, and there is a small book exchange and plenty of games. Collected on the terraces alongside the plants are all sorts of odds and ends that will give you an idea of how life used to be lived in the village.
We offer a programme of daily tours around Cappadocia, taking in the underground cities and the Ihlara Valley, together with walking tours of the local valleys. There is a wide choice of breakfasts, and every day you can choose from a range of home-cooked evening meals. In summer we sometimes organise barbecues on our terrace so you can tuck in while soaking up the stunning views. Of course our bar is always well stocked with local beers and wines as well as imported drinks.
As for the village itself, modern Goreme has a population of around 2000 people, many of them still living in cave-houses and following a traditional way of life, despite the televisions and washing machines and solar heating panels that make modern life more comfortable.
